Safely Climb Trees With Tree Climbing Harnesses
In the recent years, the trees have become a rare sight in big cities as well as commercial and residential areas. Due to this lack of greenery and trees around, the citizens have developed a certain affection and love for trees. Children as well as adults now want to spend more time in forests and wild life camps where trees are present in abundance. People do not only admire the beauty of trees from the ground below but indulge themselves in a danger filled activity of tree climbing.
In recent years, many countries have seen a rise in tree climbing sports. Other than a competitive activity, tree climbing has become a healthy recreation for most people. Yet, it is not without danger and risk. Some countries have outlawed tree climbing given to the sheer risky nature of this recreational hobby.
That is why it is strictly advised to make use of safety gear while tree climbing and it should not be taken lightly. The front line safety equipment in tree climbing is a harness or as some may call it, a saddle. The height of some trees can reach many hundreds of feet. A fall from such height can prove fatal. Safety harness should therefore strictly be made part of the tree climbing gear in combination with other safety equipment.
The harness is not a single equipment but it is a system of different components working together to ensure your safety. The main component is a fabricated jacket type hardware that you may wear around your waist, chest, legs etc. It not only provides safety but comfort and ease in climbing too. It must be made sure that the ropes used with the harness are tree climbing ropes and not the mountain climbing ones that have the ability to stretch.
Usually, harnesses are of three main types. The first type of harness is called the sit string harness. It is the most widely used climbing harness as it provides a great deal of movement while ensuring proper safety of the climber. It usually consists of a waist belt and two leg loops that are attached together in the back over the hips. This attachment is called a belay loop. It can be sometimes quite painful if the harness is even a little misfit as all the weight and pressure is applied to the groin and upper thigh area through the belay and leg loops.
The chest harness is another type of harness worn by climbers. It is designed to be worn around the shoulders which is why it is used in combination with the sit harness. By combining both the harnesses, the weight load of the climber is evenly distributed and support is provided to both the lower and upper parts of the body.
The third kind of harness is the safest harness available to the climber. It is a full body harness. This type of harness is formed by permanently attaching the sit string harness and chest harness together. It is widely used by children while climbing for better comfort and safety.

Going to watch some outdoor sport and looking for any interesting (and not lethal) hip flask recipes - preferably ones that are warm. I have tried dark rum and bovril (50:50 ratio) which is rather nice.
A nice hot chocolate flavoured with a touch of Courvoisier brandy, it'll warm the cockles of your heart..

A Brief History Of The Hip Flask
Since the 18th century people have been producing slim, ergonomic flasks for carrying distilled usually alcoholic, drinks discreetly. The form factor has become a design classic which has remained true to this day. Before that time they would be constructed from glass or leather and most often used for pilgrimages. The slightly curved body of the flask is meant to match the contour of the wearers waist or thigh making them easy to carry and conceal if necessary. The width and height of the body changes for different capacities but they are generally rectangular or discus shaped.
Antique silver hip flasks have become sort after collectors items as the vast majority of hip flasks produced today are stainless steel. Produced in the 19th century, silver was used as an alternative to other metals as it would not react with the liquid inside, preserving the flavour. In fact people believed that silver enhanced the taste of the drink inside due to its purifying qualities but it was far more common to have a hip flask made from pewter. This is a metal alloy that was mostly made up of tin but it was common for lower grade pewter to contain lead. This gave them a slight blue tint. Some were bound in leather for protection and carried an engraving plate. This made them ideal gift ideas as they could be personalised with any message or design.
As they are primarily designed to allow liquid to be transported discreetly, more recent hip flasks are constructed from plastic to avoid metal detectors but the only part of the design which has changed over time is the captive top which is attached to the flask, securing it while the flask is in use.
Leather hip flasks have become synonymous with bravery as soldiers commonly carried them to help them through hard times. The capacity of the hip flask is usually between 4 and 8oz, not enough to get very drunk but this was not the intention. Rather than being a drunkards accessory, the intention was for the contents to be shared, making it possible to toast success wherever it may be.
Hip flask production continues to this day but they are generally bought as gifts as most have an engraving plate. As these are normally sold in jewellers, you will have the option to have any message engraved onto it. Their durability and history make them a great gift idea that will last a lifetime.
Hip flasks produced today are still bound in leather or have a design on the face. The leather may have a pattern such as the speckled ostrich pattern or crocodile grain.

What to Know when Planning to Climb a Mountain
Whether you are looking for an exciting way to spend your free time or an enjoyable way to get a good work out, Mountain climbing may be the thing for you. Because the sports come with many risks, the people who take up rock climbing generally have no family or close personal ties to speak of.
If this sounds like the sort of adventure you are looking for then follow the tips below which can be useful on the climb.
- Decide on which mountain you want to climb based on the technique you will be using. If you are using rock climbing technique for example, then a mount that has low rising footpaths should be chosen. This way you will lessen the likelihood of your knees being injured along the edges. The next step is to figure out the appropriate route to take. Choose a route suitable to you level of skills and experience.
- The closer you get to the top, the steeper the terrain will get. And the higher you get the lower the oxygen level and the more severe the climate gets. The difficulty is increased with every step.
- Mountain climbing equipment is available at most outdoor sports store, so be sure to purchase everything you will need. Your mountain climbing gear should include:
- Canteen filled with water
- A good first aid kit
- Sufficient food for the entire length of your excursion
- A map
- A pair of climbing shoes
- A good coat
- Sunscreen
- Flashlight
- Sunglasses
- A backpack to fit it all in
- And some company to share the journey with. It is also safer to climb with a partner.
For your protection against wild animals it may be a good idea to take along a rifle with sufficient ammunition. Take with you warm clothing and an ice axe if you plan on going ice climbing. Remember to take your climbing rope with you as well.
It is important that you know what you are doing before you begin your climb. Be careful with every step that you take and keep your ice axe close in case you need it.
Try to protect yourself against hypothermia, try not to get lost and most importantly, enjoy the experience. It is an awesome experience, worthy to be savored and cherished.
