Rock Climbing Equipment
How do I go about becoming more serious about rock climbing?
I have rock climbed once and really loved it. The first wall that I climbed was a 5.10 and I scaled it with no problems.
I have since been wall climbing many times but I want to take it outdoors. I live close to the Alberta Rockies so location is no issue.
1) How do I go about starting outdoors. Do I have to learn how to lead?
2) What equipment do I need to invest in.
3) Can you think of any resources that might be able to match me up with someone who is looking for a climbing partner.
4) Do you know of anywhere that might be good for a beginner in the Alberta Rockies?
5) Anytips that I should know?

First off check out mountainproject.com it will give you tons off great info on routes and other stuff. If your looking to go outdoors and lead bolted routes this is what your going to need:
1 dynamic 60 meter rope
probley at least 9 or 10 quick draws (the carabiners attached by a sling)
belay device
2 slings or webbing for anchoring
more carabiners
chalk and shoes
a partner
a Guide book to your local climbing area
a instructional climbing book (Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills)(this taught me everything i know its the climbers bible)
a helmet if you plan on doing any crazy and dangerous routes
When i started outside i tried to stick to easy safe routes althogh a was a relitivly good climber. Know all the basics and how to do everything before you get up on the wall.
my tips are to not do anything stupid. Know what your doing before you do it. know your limits. have fun.

Should I join an indoor Rock Climbing gym ? Is it fun ?
Will have to spend some money, about $30 for the beginner course and spend money on equipment etc. Hope I done give up halfway. The gym is in a shopping mall near my house. I'll be going alone. I just want to get out of the house and get a new hobby. Is it a good sport for loners like me ?
Nothing wrong with it at all. I enjoy it both individually and going with a group. Granted, I'm 37 weeks pregnant at the moment so no climbing walls but it's good stress relief. If you're really not sure you want to invest, see if they have a trial membership and if you can rent your equipment. Most gyms have that. Good luck!

I've been thinking about getting into rock climbing, where would you begin? Is there some way to try it out before committing to the expensive equipment? I live in central North Carolina.

Rock Climbing Fall
Is guy I met recently a keeper? What about red flags?
He seems to be a good guy, but very early to tell. He has been divorced for about a year but filed bankruptcy as a result supposedly but also told me that during he spent 6k on rock climbing equipment?! He also seems consumed negatively by politics and dwells on it a lot! Maybe it's really a way to chanel his anger from the divorce?
You answered your own question. Run the other way, before you get emotionally attached to him. Normally the first 6 months of a friendship are happy and a bit fake. If you get red flag, stop. Stop now.
I had a hard, bitter, divorce, but never channelled any anger elsewhere like this. He has an anger management problem, possibly an impulse (spending) problem and more.
The eharmony guy (Warren) said in his book to pick your 10 Must Have's and Can't Stands and immediately stop seeing someone in the first date or two if they violate the list.
Run away....Run away. There are well adjusted people out there who are financially stable and happy and take responsibility for their own emotions.
