What kind of equipment is necessary for rock climbing?
I am interested and would like to get some info on how and where to go. Thanks.
It always good to start off in a gym. This way you can rent the essential gear before you make any major purchases and you can get in shape for climbing and learn technique. The first thing I`d buy is a pair of climbing shoes, then i`d go with a harness, carabiner, and a belay device.

Rock Climbing Equipment
How do I go about becoming more serious about rock climbing?
I have rock climbed once and really loved it. The first wall that I climbed was a 5.10 and I scaled it with no problems.
I have since been wall climbing many times but I want to take it outdoors. I live close to the Alberta Rockies so location is no issue.
1) How do I go about starting outdoors. Do I have to learn how to lead?
2) What equipment do I need to invest in.
3) Can you think of any resources that might be able to match me up with someone who is looking for a climbing partner.
4) Do you know of anywhere that might be good for a beginner in the Alberta Rockies?
5) Anytips that I should know?

First off check out mountainproject.com it will give you tons off great info on routes and other stuff. If your looking to go outdoors and lead bolted routes this is what your going to need:
1 dynamic 60 meter rope
probley at least 9 or 10 quick draws (the carabiners attached by a sling)
belay device
2 slings or webbing for anchoring
more carabiners
chalk and shoes
a partner
a Guide book to your local climbing area
a instructional climbing book (Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills)(this taught me everything i know its the climbers bible)
a helmet if you plan on doing any crazy and dangerous routes
When i started outside i tried to stick to easy safe routes althogh a was a relitivly good climber. Know all the basics and how to do everything before you get up on the wall.
my tips are to not do anything stupid. Know what your doing before you do it. know your limits. have fun.

Should I join an indoor Rock Climbing gym ? Is it fun ?
Will have to spend some money, about $30 for the beginner course and spend money on equipment etc. Hope I done give up halfway. The gym is in a shopping mall near my house. I'll be going alone. I just want to get out of the house and get a new hobby. Is it a good sport for loners like me ?
Nothing wrong with it at all. I enjoy it both individually and going with a group. Granted, I'm 37 weeks pregnant at the moment so no climbing walls but it's good stress relief. If you're really not sure you want to invest, see if they have a trial membership and if you can rent your equipment. Most gyms have that. Good luck!

is this a good Christmas present...guys please answer?
so i was thinking of getting my bf a partners lessons and belaying certification package so we can start rock climbing together...
we talk about it and he has always seemed interested, but getting started is a big jump...
would you like that gift or is it too pigeonholed and me expecting him to do something that he may not like...i do not want to get him soemthign that makes him feel liek he has to do something...even if he has shown some interest...
im just not sure...its pretty expensive...185...plus 50...plus if we decide we like it theres buying equipment...but thats later on...
im just nervous it may be too foreward...we have been dating for 3 years and im tired of getting him clothes or typical gifts...and hes rich so he has everyhting material that he really may want...
well to me yeaah i would be happy if it was something i really like i would enjoy it i tHink he would enjoy it it fun my wife got me the same thing i asked here to get me a part for my race car se did not she got me into rock climbing . because she said lets both do something she said she was tired of doing one thing every year she can race my race car against other drivers wifes she didnot want to do that so we enjoy climbing rock in branson mo at table rock state park
