What to Know when Planning to Climb a Mountain
Whether you are looking for an exciting way to spend your free time or an enjoyable way to get a good work out, Mountain climbing may be the thing for you. Because the sports come with many risks, the people who take up rock climbing generally have no family or close personal ties to speak of.
If this sounds like the sort of adventure you are looking for then follow the tips below which can be useful on the climb.
- Decide on which mountain you want to climb based on the technique you will be using. If you are using rock climbing technique for example, then a mount that has low rising footpaths should be chosen. This way you will lessen the likelihood of your knees being injured along the edges. The next step is to figure out the appropriate route to take. Choose a route suitable to you level of skills and experience.
- The closer you get to the top, the steeper the terrain will get. And the higher you get the lower the oxygen level and the more severe the climate gets. The difficulty is increased with every step.
- Mountain climbing equipment is available at most outdoor sports store, so be sure to purchase everything you will need. Your mountain climbing gear should include:
- Canteen filled with water
- A good first aid kit
- Sufficient food for the entire length of your excursion
- A map
- A pair of climbing shoes
- A good coat
- Sunscreen
- Flashlight
- Sunglasses
- A backpack to fit it all in
- And some company to share the journey with. It is also safer to climb with a partner.
For your protection against wild animals it may be a good idea to take along a rifle with sufficient ammunition. Take with you warm clothing and an ice axe if you plan on going ice climbing. Remember to take your climbing rope with you as well.
It is important that you know what you are doing before you begin your climb. Be careful with every step that you take and keep your ice axe close in case you need it.
Try to protect yourself against hypothermia, try not to get lost and most importantly, enjoy the experience. It is an awesome experience, worthy to be savored and cherished.

An Old Whorehouse
We climbed through a broken window,
walked through every room.
Out of business for years,
the mattresses held only
rainwater, and one
woman’s black shoe. Downstairs
spiders had wrapped up
the crystal chandelier.
A cracked cup lay in the sink.
But we were fourteen,
and no way dust could hide
the expected glamour from us,
or teach us anything.
We whispered, we imagined.
It would be years before
we’d learn how effortlessly
sin blooms, then softens,
like any bed of flowers.

Mary Oliver and her friend - both fourteen year old girls - break into an old and derelict building which used to be the town whorehouse.
They are so excited by the naughtiness of sex - especially paid-for sex - that the place seems glamorous and full of forbidden thrills to them:
But we were fourteen,
and no way dust could hide
the expected glamour from us,
But the truth of the matter is, the place is a broken down old building; it is dirty and full of decay; soon it will need to be torn down.
The girls who used to work there are all also either old, or dead, by now. But Mary and her friends don't think of that.
The poem is about how many things seem strange and exciting to us when we are young. But the truth of the matter is that everything gets old and dies eventually. This is why it is so important to grasp pleasure when it comes, it won't last long.
If you are writing an essay on it, call it a Carpe Diem poem - and compare it with Richard Herrick's Gather Ye Rosebuds.
Your teacher will think you are a genius.
Maybe she will even be right.

| | Climbing Stars $27.19 In addition to issuing two collectable folk albums for Epic in 1963 and 1964, the Goldebriars recorded quite a few tracks during their short existence that were never released, as well as a 1965 non-LP single. This Japanese CD compilation has 21 of these rarities, all but two of them (the 1965 single "June Bride Baby"/"I'm Gonna Marry You") previously unissued. The most interesting songs by far are the eight that were recorded with an expanded six-member lineup (including future Music Machine drummer Ron Edgar), including the aforementioned single and eight tracks (two of them alternate takes) recorded for an unreleased third album. These show the group moving from commercial harmonized folk to a tentative, folky sort of pop/rock, though it might be stretching things to call it folk-rock -- if so, it's pre-folk-rock of the mildest sort, none of it written by the band (and "Licorice" owes much more to bubblegumish teen pop than folk or folk-rock of any sort). Still, it was an unusual blend for its time, and a few of these unissued numbers earmarked for the third album are the best things the group ever did. Those highlights include the catchy "Nothing Wrong with You That My Love Can't Cure" (which is rather like the folkish pop-rock Jackie DeShannon was doing around 1964), the similar "Tell It to the Wind" (co-written by Jeff Barry), and the dramatic, if slightly hokey, "Last Two People on Earth." Less exciting, though still of interest to Goldebriars fans, are the earlier outtakes and alternates recorded when they were an acoustic, drumless quartet, which are cleanly harmonized early-'60s folk with an innocent air. All of the 21 tracks on this compilation, incidentally, have been issued as bonus cuts on the expanded CD versions of their two official '60s Epic albums that came out in the US in 2006, one of which (the expanded version of The Goldebriars) also has an alternate take of "Jump Down" that doesn't appear on this Japanese anthology. If you do want virtually all of this rare material on one disc, however, this collection presents it in a neat annotated package, with liner notes by Goldebriar Dottie Holmberg-Waddell and a cover photo (taken by future Music Machine leader Sean Bonniwell) different than the ones used on either of their official LPs. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |
