| | The Nylon Curtain $19.98 Billy Joel hit back as hard as he could with Glass Houses, his bid to prove that he could rock as hard as any of those new wave punks. He might not have proven himself a punk -- for all of his claims of being a hard rocker, his work inevitably is pop because of his fondness for melody -- but he proved to himself that he could still rock, even if the critics didn't give him any credit for it. It was now time to mature, to move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect. In short, The Nylon Curtain is where Billy Joel went serious, consciously crafting a song cycle about Baby Boomers in the Reagan era. Since this was an album about Baby Boomers, he chose to base his music almost entirely on the Beatles, the pivotal rock band for his generation. Joel is naturally inclined to write big melodies like McCartney, but he idolizes Lennon, which makes The Nylon Curtain a fascinating cross between ear candy and social commentary. His desire to record a grand concept album is admirable, but his ever-present lyrical shortcomings mean that the songs paint a picture without arriving at any insights. He occasionally gets lost in his own ambition, as on the waterlogged second side, but the first half of the song suite -- "Allentown," "Laura," "Pressure," "Goodnight Saigon," "She's Right on Time" -- is layered, successful, mature pop that brings Joel tantalizingly close to his ultimate goal of sophisticated pop/rock for mature audiences. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |
| | Behind the Orange Curtain $19.19 Someone who hasn't spent time in southern California might not fully appreciate the title Behind the Orange Curtain. Back in the '70s and '80s -- when there was still a Soviet Union and the communist governments of Eastern Europe were referred to as "behind the Iron Curtain" -- folks in Los Angeles County jokingly referred to Orange County (their neighbor to the south) as "the Orange Curtain." That term became dated when the Cold War ended and there was no longer an Iron Curtain separating Eastern and Western Europe, but it's still a funny term. Well, the L.A.-based Bulletboys ventured "behind the Orange Curtain" when they recorded this live hard rock/metal album at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana. The credits, unfortunately, don't tell listeners when Behind the Orange Curtain was recorded, but it was probably around 2002-2003 because lead singer Marq Torien refers to Sophie (a 2003 release) as a new album that would be out soon. The Bulletboys lineup heard on this 55-minute CD is not the old Torien/Mick Sweda/Lonnie Vencent/Jimmy D'Anda lineup; Torien, the only remaining original member, is joined by guitarist Tommy Pittman, bassist Jimmy Nelson, and drummer Pete Newman. But a lot of old favorites are performed, including "Hang on St. Christopher," "Hard as a Rock," "Shoot the Preacher Down," and the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money" -- and Torien fares well by letting his bluesy, R&B-ish instincts prevail. Occasionally, Behind the Orange Curtain ventures into alternative rock/post-grunge territory ("Walls" and "Toy," for example), but much of the time, this album is a tribute to the Bulletboys' late-'80s/early-'90s heyday (before alterna-rock became an influence for the band). And while it falls short of essential, Behind the Orange Curtain is a generally enjoyable release that the Bulletboys' die-hard fans will appreciate. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Marq Torien - Vocals; Pete Newman - Drums |

Boulders Rock Climbing

Is this good?
I've been rock climbing from this summer, and by now I flash almost all 5.9's and top most 5.10’s after falling off 2-3 times. When I boulder, I flash all v0’s and v1’s, flash almost all v2’s, and top a couple of v3’s and v4’s. Is this good ocnsidering the time I’ve been climbing? I’m 13 now, and I was 12 when I began in the summer, by the way.
I'd just like to know if I'm good considering my age and the time I've had to improve. ![]()
I have absolutely no idea.

Rock climbing tearing?
I was working on a boulder today, and I tore a nickel sized piece of skin off my index finger. It's just the top layer (fingerprint layer), no bleeding, and it's still got a flap attached. Is it better to cut it off or tape over the flap and let it grow back on?
Tape over
It will heel faster
Unless it is dirty
