North Face Unisex

Is this backpack to boyish?
I want to get a north face backpack. But the one i found is blue and looks sort-of boyish. It was in the mens department. I like it though. I think it could be unisex.
it looks a bit like this http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/jester.html?parent_category_rn=
It does not look boyish though. It is dark blue so, it think it does not matter much. But I saw some girls wearing those kind of back packs.
If some one doubts and ask you whether it is a boy backpack, just say i borrowed it from my cousin or it is my favorite color
Hope my suggestion helps ![]()

It's a unisex glove design that helps wick moisture away from your skin while hiking, biking and Nordic skiing. The stretch and articulation in The North Face Power Stretch Gloves offer a clear advantage over mitten designs, especially if you're flipping gear switches on your mountain bike, making fine strap buckle adjustments on snowshoe adventures or just digging around in your workout pants pockets looking for spare change for an energy bar. Keep in mind that these gloves are optimized for aerobic activities or casual wear in cool conditions. If you need gloves for skiing, snowboarding or shoveling slush, you'll be better served by one of the waterproof insulated winter gloves from The North Face, but if you tend to work up a sweat in cold weather, these Power Stretch Gloves are a personal best in breathable insulated comfort. |

The North Face reinforced the palm and finger areas with a lightweight polyurethane gripper material that helps protect the glove from abrasion. Unlike cheap unisex fleece handwear, the Women's Windwall Gloves utilize a special Radiametric Articulation construction and female-specific 5-Dimension Fit for enhanced dexterity and sag-free fit. Outdoors Publisher Reports on Survival Trends
Outdoors Publisher Reports on Survival Trends
William C. Holm, BH Publishing Owner, and Editor of Your World Outdoors.Com, and Your World Outdoors. Us issued a report today entitled “Recent Survival Trends,†which highlights some of the major changes in product development, buyer’s preferences for camping and survival gear products, and other survival trends.
In issuing this report, Mr. Holm noted that several trends had converged during the past year, namely price-comparison shopping and more unisex product design.
Some of the other trends noted were:
1) While there had been a slight increase last year in camping (5.34%) and hiking (8.5%), the number of people actively hunting had decreased by 1.1 %.
2) Trail running, backpacking, and wildlife viewing increased by 15.2%, 18.5%, and 5.0% respectively.
3) While there had been an upswing in outdoor camping, particularly RV camping, most campers prefer to camp relatively close to home.
4) The Pacific Northwest (18.9%) and the Upper Midwest (16.9%) have the most campers when compared to the rest of the United States.
Hunting & Bow-Hunting Trends-
Keeping in mind that there has been a decrease in the numbers of hunters and a reported increase the numbers of firearms purchased this year, particularly handguns, it is speculated that most of the handguns purchased are for self-defense. When considered in conjunction with reports that ammunition manufacturers are working around the clock to keep up with sales orders, we have concluded that people are stockpiling these goods for a future use. “This has caused some concern among outdoor groups and hunting organizations,†the publisher remarked.
According to the NSGA, hunting and firearms showed the greatest percentage increase among equipment purchases in 2007. Sales of hunting & firearms equipment rose 16% to $4.6 billion from $3.9 billion in 2007.
Bowhunting and the purchase of cross bows have seen a dramatic rise in the past three years. One of the reasons for this has been the National Archery in the Schools Program. Young and old alike seem drawn to this sport primarily due to the unique skills involved, advances in bow design technology, the relative ease of getting a bowhunting license, and the particular camaraderie of hunting game in the forest.
Demographics-
The NSGA also found that women make up 12% of all bowhunters in the United States. Nearly 786,000 females went bowhunting more than once in the past year. The average age of female bowhunters is 37.9. Indeed, current data seems to indicate that women are quickly joining with men in core survival activities namely backpacking, camping, hunting, and wilderness trekking. More and more women are buying survival gear products as they “take to the woods†in large numbers. The growth of the B.O.W. (Becoming An Outdoors Woman) program throughout the United States may be one of the factors contributing to the increase in the number of outdoors women.
The average age for a female hunter was 30.4 years and the average age for a male hunter was 45.7 years of age. However, young people (ages 6-17 years) for the most part, continue to show a decreased appetite for outdoor activities such as camping, backpacking, and hiking.
Recent Sales Trends-
(Retailers Cut Prices)
In view of the recession, shoppers have become bargain shoppers. This means that instead of buying a premium brand name backpack, sleeping bag, or tent, outdoor enthusiasts are going to the Big Box Stores retail outlet or website to purchase their gear. The average price for a backpack is $30.00, a sleeping bag is $39.00, and a 3- person tent on average is purchased for about $101.00. Further, the big name retailers can out-advertise, stock larger quantities, display more products, and keep good customer relations due to their highly developed business processes. A report from Internet Retailerâ indicated that the more sophisticated websites, with fast order processing and page load times garnered more sales than slower and less sophisticated websites. Hence, Walmart, Amazon, Sears, Target, and Kmart outperform the smaller specialty sites when it comes to camping product sales.
Even the niche sites are cutting prices on survival gear items in the face of frugal shoppers.
For example, Sierra Trading Post has cut the prices on some of its products by 50%, Cabelas has cut prices on some items by 20% to 70%, Eastern Mountain Sports from 20-40%, and Mountain Gear has cut from 20-70%, Altrec by 15%, and Gander Mountain offers 40 % off on some items. It should be noted that Gander Mountain is promoting over 3,000 firearms for sale on its website.
(Eco-Friendly Products Increase)
Another trend noted in the report is that camping and survival good manufacturers have started making environmental friendly products by using recycled material or “green†material such as vegan or organic resources such as bamboo. The North Faceâ, Timberland Bootsâ, Patagoniaâ, Merrellâ, Burtonâ, Keenâ, and Mountain Hardwearâ are some of the leaders in eco-friendly camping products.
Primaloft® ECO, an earth-friendly mix of recycled and virgin insulation for coats and sleeping bags are relatively new innovations in “green†products. A new Eco-Friendly DRYRIDEâ Recycled Polyester Fabrication, and Eco-Friendly Waterproof/Breathable Lamination with DWR Coatingä, are several new inventions included into Burton Coats and jackets. These eco-friendly products can be purchased at Altrec.Com, Cabelas.Com, Eastern Mountain Sports.Com, Mountain Gear.Com, and Moosejaw.Com.
The Full Report-
The full report contains a discussion of Home-Made & Do-It Survival Gear, Home-Made Survival Kits, Recent Innovations in Survival Gear, Summary & Conclusions, and a list of references. Copies of the full report can be obtained by contacting the publisher.

North Face Long

should i get a north face?
So I live in Boston, and I get very, very cold. Like, where usual people wear a sweatshirt, I wear a sweatshirt and mittens. and a hat.
So I was looking at the north face denali jacket and the khumbu jacket. which is better for me? i'd like to wear a long sleeved shirt and a fleece and be able to go outside in 30-40 degree weather and not freeze to death.
so my mom is against the denali because it is so pricey, but i hear that it's a good investment and that the khumbu is more for lighter wear.
and also, should i look at girls sizes? i have long arms, but i am a size 2 (xtra small/small). my measurements are 32-25-36, i weigh 107lbs, and i'm 5'5". thanks.
The North Face makes some good clothing but it isn't quite as good as its reputation. The Denali is made from Polartech 300 fleece. It's a good jacket but it won't keep you any warmer than any other jacket made from Polartech 300. If you are looking to save some money get on Yahoo's search engine and enter polartech 300 jacket. You should find many to choose from. The only problem with Polartech 300 is it won't block the wind.
The Khombu is made from TKA 300 fleece, A North Face proprietary fabric. I am not familiar with it but there has to be a reason it is priced at half as much as the Denali. I would buy a less expensive brand Polartech jacket before buying a Khombu.
The warmest fleece I know is Gore Windstopper. It's expensive but because it eliminates wind chill you stay warmer. Mountain Hardware makes an awesome Windstopper jacket. Show this to your mother. The Denali will seem like a bargain. http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Product.aspx?top=1828&prod=3498&cat=1843&viewAll=False

In for the Long Drive
Do you know what it is like to sit in a car for more than ten hours? If you do, then you know all about long drives. Every year, people make the trek from new York to Florida. These people, often referred to as "snowbirds" know all too well what it is like to sit in hours of traffic, face unexpected car accidents and have to shell out money in gasoline expenses, food costs and possible overnight stays in hotels and motels along the way.
There are also those people who refuse to put themselves through this kind of "torture". Instead, they prefer to have their vehicles shipped by using an auto transport carrier so that they can save themselves the hassle of driving on heavily trafficked roads as well as putting all of that extra wear and tear on their vehicles. Think about it. In the course of one year, I typically make the long, arduous drive from North Carolina to New York and back. To drive to North Carolina to where I live in New York (one way) is approximately 580 miles. And this doesn't even count the amount of miles that I put on my car once I am home and am running errands, visiting with family or going out with friends! By the time all is said and done and I am back in North Carolina, I have easily put over 1,000 miles on my car. Multiply that number by four or five, and I have easily put somewhere around 5,000 miles on my car in one year just from driving to and from home.
People don't just face long drives on the Interstate when they are traveling hours to visit family, go on vacation or visit friends in another state. In fact, many people face long drives every day when they leave their homes to travel to and from work. Case and point; my boyfriend's brother works as an airplane engineer. However, in order to get to the airplane hangar where he works, he has to leave his home and drive one hour (one way) just to get to work! Now consider the fact that he goes to work a minimum of five days a week. Luckily for him, he can take the highway to get to and from work. But usually, he still gets stuck in rush hour traffic that usually winds up getting backed up on the highway when everyone is intent on getting home. The constant stop and go of traffic can easily make your gas tank go down and can significantly add to the wear and tear that your vehicle has to endure. This is why many people, when they are preparing to purchase a used car, will want to know whether or not the car has gotten the majority of its miles from city driving or if the miles are mostly from highway driving.
If you are planning on making a long trip or if you have no choice but to take long drives to work, etc., then make every effort to stick to highway driving if at all possible so that you can help to preserve the life of your vehicle.

North Face Climbing

Anyone have any good ideas about climbing plants?
What is a good climbing plant that can take morning shade and blazing afternoon sun in North Texas?
I have an eight foot fence between me and a neighbor. The fence needs to stay because they are "not neat and tidy" to say the least. I would like to jazz the fence up a bit, but I don't know what to plant that wouldn't fry in our wonderful hot Texas sun. The plants will be facing west.
Help?
Trumpet Vine, once it is established, is just about indestructible.

North Face Hooded

Anyone have a white hooded north face jacket? i need some help!?
Im scared to wash it because i don't want it to get messed up...so can you tell me how to wash it without it getting mesed up? and do you dry it in the dryer or let it air dry?
This is what it looks like: its fuzzy and soft, and i want it to stay like that ![]()

There should be washing instructions on a label somewhere inside the jacket. When in doubt, wash in cold water with laundry detergent and dry on low, or hang to dry if you're still nervous.
I can't tell from the picture, but it looks like fleece, which can sometimes get little pills in the fabric over time. These can be removed with a fabric shaver, which they sell at places like Bed Bath and Beyond or Target. If it is fleece, the dryer might help with the fluffiness.
You'll need to was it eventually, since you certainly won't want to wear it if it's filthy!

Sleeping Bag Advice - Which Sleeping Bag Should I Buy?
SLEEPING BAGS
About Sleeping Bags
Being comfortable and warm at night is crucial for enjoyment of the outdoors, so a good sleeping bag is a vital piece of camping equipment. It's hard to appreciate a beautiful dawn when you've spent most of the night shivering in an inadequate bag. So here's some advice on helping to choose a sleeping bag.
First and foremost, a sleeping bag must keep you warm. The sleeping bag filling is of importance here, but so is design. The closer fitting a sleeping bag, the warmer it will be so the best shape is a tapered one (or mummy style sleeping bag). An adjustable sleeping bag hood is needed too, as much heat is lost through the head. However, for comfort, you also need a sleeping bag you can stretch out and curl up in rather than one that feels like a strait-jacket. The big decision to be reached is about the filling. There are three choices: waterfowl down, polyester fill and fibre-pile. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
Down Sleeping Bags Vs Synthetic Sleeping Bags
Down sleeping bags have the best warmth for weight ratio, packs up smallest and is long lasting, but loses all warmth when soaked, is slow to dry, hard to clean and is quite expensive. Polyester sleeping bags using materials such as Hollowfil, Quallofil and Polarguard are quick drying, resistant to damp and reasonably priced but bulkier and heavier than down for equivalent warmth and are shorter lived. Fibre-pile is warm when wet, quick drying, long lasting and inexpensive, but again bulkier and heavier than down for equivalent warmth.
Where weight is critical, down is the best choice, For shorter trips or car camping, polyester is suitable, whilst for bivouacing or snowholing where your bag is likely to get damp, pile is worth considering. Whatever the fill, sleeping bags come in various weights with season or temperature ratings. Be warned, these are guidelines only. Cold sleepers may need an extra 'season' to ensure a warm night, whilst warm ones may be able to get away with a lighter bag than that suggested for the time of year. You can of course 'stretch' the warmth of a bag by wearing clothes in it, using a sleeping bag liner, and all sleeping bags will perform better if used with an insulating mat underneath. Sleeping bags are manufactured by most of the top outdoor manufacturers including: Snugpak, Cumulus Sleeping Bags, Mountain Equipment, RAB and The North Face.
Sleeping Bag Season Rating
This tells you, roughly, at what time of the year the sleeping bag can be used comfortably. However, the season rating cannot be too specific as toleration of cold varies from person to person.
1 season sleeping bag - use in summer
2 season sleeping bag - use from late spring to early autumn
3 season sleeping bag - use through spring, summer and autumn
4 season sleeping bag - low level use all year round
The above refers to general use, not high level mountain use, i.e. 4 season sleeping bags are sometimes not suitable for winter expeditions. Sleeping Bag Materials
The Filling: Its purpose is to trap air and prevent its circulation. The air is heated by your body and because it is retained around you, provides the warmth necessary to keep you comfortable whilst you sleep.
Down Sleeping Bags: Nature's own is still the best sleeping bag insulating material. It is lightweight with excellent loft (fluffs up well to trap air) and is extremely compressible to give a small pack size. Down has excellent "drape" properties, settling around the body and eliminating the drafty gaps sometimes left by stiffer synthetics. However, down is a poor performer when wet, unlike some polyester fibres which resist moisture well. Down sleeping bags also tend to be more expensive.
Synthetic Sleeping Bags: Heavier, bulkier and with a much shorter life-span than down, yet cheaper, easier to clean and the best choice for wet conditions where it still offers reasonable insulation. Synthetic fillings are made up of polyester fibres of various construction. The most common is 'hollowfibre' where short tubular fibres have a hollow centre for trapping air, giving good insulating properties and reducing weight.
'Kontrol', from the UK manufacturer John Cotton is a latest innovation giving small pack size but high loft capabilities for sleeping bags. NB: The weight of filling in a sleeping bag is not an accurate indicator of its thermal performance as the quality of fillings vary. A high-quality sleeping bag filling may cost a bit more but gives a better warmth to weight ratio.
Shell Fabrics: These hold the sleeping bags filling in place. A close weave on the outer helps repel water/wind penetration as well as keeping the filling in. Probably the most common fabric used today is a lightweight nylon which also offers low bulk. In some instances this will be Ripstop on the outer. This means it incorporates a reinforced, fiber mesh to prevent tearing and, because of the increased strength gained, an even lighter material can be used. Some nylon sleeping bag shells are coated to make them more water resistant, yet still allow the body to 'breath'. 'Pertex' fabric also does this. In addition it wicks moisture away from the body to keep you dry.
Occasionally cotton is used as a lining, as this is very comfortable to sleep in but the penalty is extra bulk and weight and it is slower to dry. In some bags, a metalised layer is incorporated between the filling and shell to reflect back body heat. This can improve the performance of a bag by up to 15%.
Sleeping Bag Construction
There are various methods of keeping the filling in place.
Stitched Through Sleeping Bags: Quilting holds the filling in channels or baffles. However, you get cold spots along the stitch lines so this method is unsuitable for cold weather bags.
Double Layer Offset: As above but using 2 layers. Offsetting the quilting helps eliminate the problem of cold spots in your sleeping bag.
Profile: A 'no stitch through' construction which produces 30% extra loft. Special resins enable the insulating fibres to support themselves inside the sleeping bag, without the need for any quilting. This means no stitch lines, and hence, no cold spots.
Sleeping Bag Features
Sleeping Bag Zips: Allow for easy access and, as all our zips are of the '2-way' type, there is an option to open the foot of the bag for ventilation on warm nights giving more flexibility to the upper temperature rating. As a zip creates a cold spot, all of them have a zip baffle - a tube of insulation that backs the zip and ensures you stay warm inside. All of our zipped bags are available with either left or right hand zips. If you wish to zip 2 bags together, get one of each. Otherwise, we recommend a left hand zip for right hand users and a right hand zip for left hand users. Our zips have an anti-snagging feature to prevent them 'catching' either the baffle or the bag edges.
Sleeping Bag Hoods: All our sleeping bags have tailored hoods adjusted by drawcord.
Neck Baffles: This insulated collar is to be found on most of our sleeping bags. A drawcord brings this snugly around you ensuring no cold drafts down the back of the neck.
Box Foot: Here, the foot section is created by a circular piece of insulated fabric, creating a 'mummy' shape which gives plenty of room for the feet.
Sleeping Bag Stuff Sacks: Most sleeping bags come with a stuff sac for easy transport. Most incorporate compression straps to reduce pack size.
IMPORTANT: Storage
When not in use, your sleeping bag should be stored loose. Continual compression is bad for the filling and will reduce the life of your sleeping bag. Cumulus down sleeping bags are sold with a storage sack as well as a compression sack.
