An Old Whorehouse
We climbed through a broken window,
walked through every room.
Out of business for years,
the mattresses held only
rainwater, and one
woman’s black shoe. Downstairs
spiders had wrapped up
the crystal chandelier.
A cracked cup lay in the sink.
But we were fourteen,
and no way dust could hide
the expected glamour from us,
or teach us anything.
We whispered, we imagined.
It would be years before
we’d learn how effortlessly
sin blooms, then softens,
like any bed of flowers.

Mary Oliver and her friend - both fourteen year old girls - break into an old and derelict building which used to be the town whorehouse.
They are so excited by the naughtiness of sex - especially paid-for sex - that the place seems glamorous and full of forbidden thrills to them:
But we were fourteen,
and no way dust could hide
the expected glamour from us,
But the truth of the matter is, the place is a broken down old building; it is dirty and full of decay; soon it will need to be torn down.
The girls who used to work there are all also either old, or dead, by now. But Mary and her friends don't think of that.
The poem is about how many things seem strange and exciting to us when we are young. But the truth of the matter is that everything gets old and dies eventually. This is why it is so important to grasp pleasure when it comes, it won't last long.
