Petzl GriGri 2 Belay Device Review
Wet Abseiling: What, Where, How
Abseiling or rappelling is an act that climbers use this technique when a cliff or slope is too steep and/or dangerous to descend without protection. Some equipments are needed in this technique. There are ropes, helmet, carabiner, figure eight device and a harness.
A carabiner is a metal loop with a screwed gate. The loop part opposite the gate is referred to as the spine. It can quickly and reversibly connect components in safety-critical systems.
Figure eight device is most commonly used as a descender. It is an aluminium or occasionally steel, the "8" shaped device allow fast and controlled descent on a rope. They are easy to set up and are effective in dissipating the heat caused by friction.
A harness is system used for connecting the rope to the climber. Most harnesses used in climbing are preconstructed and are worn around the pelvis and hips.
The Gears: carabiner, figure eight device, harness
Imagine million tons of water pouring at you and you need to abseil down from a 15m high waterfall. This is called Wet Abseiling. It is a dangerous activity but with proper equipment and trained guide, it becomes an enjoyable and fun activity. In Malaysia you can find it in Ulu Geruntum Waterfall in Gopeng, Perak and Lata Kijang Waterfall in Tapah, Perak. MyTravelKaki do organize trip to Ulu Geruntum occasionally.
is she ascending or descending ?
the waterfall, 15m high
On 6 Nov 2010, eight (8) of MyTravelKaki's members and friends travel to Ulu Geruntum Fall. To get to the fall, we took a lorry from Gua Tempurung parking area. It takes about 45 minutes. At the site the participants were taught how to use the equipment and a trial run before the real one. Once is ready, everyone hike up to the waterfall and waiting for theirs turn to abseil down.
The Abseiling Team
The Ulu Geruntum Waterfall
I was the one who go 1st. During abseil, your leg must straight and open up with an angle of 90 degree to the fall. This is a correct and comfortable position when you abseil down.
A rubber shoes like Kg. Adidas will give you good grip against the fall. Half way you can even let go your hand holding to the rope in front but DO NOT let go your hand holding the rope at the back. Most of us pose for photo at this stage. Slowly let go the rope bit by bit and walk down the fall. There you are you are abseiling down from a waterfall. Everyone did it 2 or 3 times before we call it off the day.
Again the question "It is Dangerous ?". Yes but with proper equipment and well trained guide you are safe. There are 2 guides, one at the top and another one as a belay guide. The top guide will make sure all the gears are properly fixed to you and an additional safety line hook on to you. The belay guide will make sure you don't swing from left to right and lost control during the descend.

| | Traditional Lead Climbing $35.44 For intermediate climbers who already have experience with roped climbing, this guide explains how to lead a climb with gear. It is not intended for beginners. She first describes how traditional leading fits with roped rock climbing as a whole and the challenges involved, hardware and tools, transitioning from the gym to outdoors, and skill building in low-risk environments. Chapters that follow discuss advanced trad lead skills, such as multipitch techniques and self-rescue; knot and rope craft; and ratings, climbing etiquette, and impact and access issues. Advice from traditional leaders, b&w photos, and illustrations are incorporated. A working knowledge of basic climbing equipment and simple systems like belaying, top-roping, and leading is assumed. Techniques described mainly refer to roped free climbing on rock. Pesterfield, a freelance writer, is also a rock climbing and outdoor recreation instructor. | | Mountaineers Books Climbing Self Rescue $19.95 Because few climbers carry fancy (and expensive) search and rescue gear, all skills taught in this book use the items typically found on a climbing rack: rope, carabiners, slings, and cord. Text, illustrations, and photos explain knots, belaying and hauling systems, rappelling, ascension, passing knots, how to safely assist and rig an injured climber, and more. Roughly half of the book is devoted to real-life climbing scenarios and solutions ranging from moderate to severe. Because real-life situations rarely unfold as they do in practice, Climbing Self-Rescue teaches how to analyze and improvise your way out of a crisis. |

Using an Auto Belay for Rock Climbing Walls
What's an auto belay?
Traditionally, top rope climbing involves two people - the climber and the belayer. As the climber ascends the wall, the belayer takes up slack in the rope through a belay device. With a brake hand on the rope at all times, the belayer controls the descent of the climber and is also responsible for applying a braking technique in the event of a fall.
An auto belay is an automatic belay device that eliminates the need for a human belayer. In the case of the TRUBLUE Auto Belay, we use a patented self-regulating braking system, which is enabled by non-contacting magnetic braking technology. The auto belay takes up the slack as a climber ascends and controls the descent when the climber reaches the top or in the event of a fall. Rather than requiring one human belayer per climber, auto belay devices allows multiple climbers on the wall with one person as a supervisor.
Why use an auto belay?
Bottom line, incorporating auto belays into your facility helps you increase revenue while reducing costs and risk.
- Attract single climbers: With an auto belay, climbers don't need to rely on having a partner every time they visit your facility. Single climbers can come in whenever their schedule allows, giving them the opportunity to visit your facility more frequently.
- Reduce barriers to entry: Climbing can be intimidating for beginners, and climbing wall operators can attract more new participants by minimizing the barriers to entry. Auto belays eliminate the need for belayer training and testing, allowing new participants to just clip in and climb. This also makes auto belay devices perfect for venues that attract infrequent climbers, like amusement parks and resorts.
- Provide a unique endurance training tool: Using an auto belay device gives single climbers the ability to climb up and down routes continuously without the need to take turns with their climbing partner. The result is an endurance workout much more intense that in traditional indoor climbing.
- Increase programming while decreasing staff costs: Having modular auto belays allows you to hold more classes, birthday parties, clinics and other group programming while keeping staff costs to a minimum. Simply move the auto belay devices to the areas where they are most needed for your programming schedule and fewer staff members will be needed to belay or supervise your climbers.
- Minimize your facility risk: The biggest risk in running a climbing facility are falls related to belayer human error. Auto belay devices eliminate the human error factor from the equation, reducing your risk.
About the Author
Designed for climbers and engineered for safety, the TRUBLUE Auto Belay is the next generation of indoor and outdoor climbing wall auto belays.TRUBLUE uses technology superior to prior and current auto belay devices and is engineered to meet the strictest safety standards of all auto belays. Modular and compact, TRUBLUE auto belays are easy to install, move and maintain.
Incorporating auto belays into your climbing wall facility helps you increase revenue while reducing costs and risk. Auto belays are ideal for Universities/Colleges, Recreation Centers, Climbing Gyms, Fitness Facilities, Amusement Parks, Schools, Camps, Parks, Entertainment Centers, Ropes Courses and Resorts.

Belay Gear

DNB Really as bad as that?
I and my climbing partner are heading to the valley and have been contemplating climbing the Direct North Buttress of Middle Cathedral. 5.10 A0 V. Now all the stories and beta I have found make it sound like a nightmare 20m run outs on crappy gear. Poor belays. More than one story of Open Fractures of ankles. But it is also listed by many as a must do. My question is this: is this a fair assessment? I climb in the mid 12's (do not trad lead much anymore but I have lead 11++ trad in the past) or am I better off doing say the East buttress of El Cap?
Thanks
have you ever climbed in the valley or toulumne? if the books warn of scary runouts expect them to be accurate. I haven't done the route so I have no actual beta but I have climbed in yosemite and the bigtime trad runouts they describe will be there, you can bet on that. I'd do some routes to get used to climbing in the valley and talk to some of the regulars who you'll meet at camp about the routes you want to get on.
and to wayner: you never plan to break an ankle, when I broke mine it wasn't a case of "just don't fall". if you climb certain routes then you risk broken bones just by being there. and to be honest I have taken hundreds of falls much worse than the one that got my ankles. you obviously have never done a route that required a crux protected by rp nuts or some other hokey "maybe it'll slow me down" pro options, runouts on crappy pro exist, trust me on this.....
