palm-muting technique?
I had a lesson with my guitar teacher on monday. He's having me do some pretty basic techniques but he noted that when I do my modes, as I take my fingers off the lower strings they ring out, creating a lot of background noise. He taught me that the index finger of the fret hand keeps the higher strings muted, which I can manage easily, and that you should move the palm of your hand up as you climb the strings to mute them. I really can't find a feel for how to do this. I only get him once every other week and I don't want to waste time by learning how to do this technique when I come back. If anybody has any suggestions, maybe videos or reading that will help me figure out how to do this, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Rock n' Roll!
There are a few ways to mute the ringing that occurs after your fingers are removed from the strings. As your Instructor said, the index finger of the fretting hand can usually mute the higher strings without a lot of effort or practice. Another technique is to lift the finger that is holding the fret slightly and pause (very briefly) before releasing the string completely. This will cause that finger to mute the string. With a palm mute there are really (at least) two techniques. The first is where the pinky side of your strumming/picking hand is resting light on the strings near the bridge. With this method each string will produce more of a "thump" sound than a full out ring. I prefer this more for quiet, staccato strumming. The second technique, and the one your instructor is most likely referring to, involves resting the same part of your hand (again the outside of your strumming/picking hand, i.e. the fleshy part under the pinky but more toward the side of your hand) immediately following a strum or pluck. This last technique is a little more difficult to pull off than the other methods and will take practice.
I recommend practicing with your hand resting on the strings the whole time. This will allow you to get a feel for the proper amount of pressure. You'll want to be able to hear the note distinctly without any buzzing or "chucking" (chucking is the sound the guitar makes when the strings are played with the notes completely muted). After you get a feel for the pressure involved, play the strings open and then rest that same part of your hand to get the full mute. Experiment with how quickly your hand rests on the strings (slow mute versus fast mute). After that, you'll want to increase speed a little. Just do down strokes (nothing fancy) and alternately let it ring and then mute, ring, mute, etc.
The feel on the hand isn't exactly natural, but with practice it can become second nature.

| | Mountaineers Books 100111 Alpine Climbing Techniques to Take You Higher $33.98 This intermediate level guide addresses tools skills and techniques used in alpine terrain including rock snow ice and glaciers at moderate altitude approximately 5000 meters (16 000 feet) and lower. The technical protection systems are covered of course. But 30 years of alpine climbing experience has convinced the authors that mastery and safety lie in the far more difficult task of knowing exactly which techniques to use where and when. Therefore they teach step by step decision making skills providing scenarios checklists and self posed questions to inform the decision process. Alpine Climbing assumes some prior knowledge primarily in rock climbing skills and techniques. Basic knots belaying rappelling building rock anchors leading placing rock protection and movement skills on rock: variations of these skills that are of particular value in the alpine environment are addressed in this book. Author: Mark Houston and Kathy Cosley. |
| | Traditional Lead Climbing $35.44 For intermediate climbers who already have experience with roped climbing, this guide explains how to lead a climb with gear. It is not intended for beginners. She first describes how traditional leading fits with roped rock climbing as a whole and the challenges involved, hardware and tools, transitioning from the gym to outdoors, and skill building in low-risk environments. Chapters that follow discuss advanced trad lead skills, such as multipitch techniques and self-rescue; knot and rope craft; and ratings, climbing etiquette, and impact and access issues. Advice from traditional leaders, b&w photos, and illustrations are incorporated. A working knowledge of basic climbing equipment and simple systems like belaying, top-roping, and leading is assumed. Techniques described mainly refer to roped free climbing on rock. Pesterfield, a freelance writer, is also a rock climbing and outdoor recreation instructor.
