The Spiders were bought as trial crampons. My biggest problem is Maisie because when we are in descent mode she walks to heel. This is the only time she walks to heel I may add! Needless to say big spiky things on feet are liable to shred paws and possibly the odd wet nose. As we don't do serious days up steep snow crampons would be overkill anyway.
The Spiders actually worked very well…when they stayed on…and they did stay on for long periods. At present I blame myself for poor fitting technique. Hopefully a couple more trips will determine their actual effectiveness.
I'm also looking at kahtoolas as they might bridge the crampon gap more effectively.
Irene you are perfectly correct. When we got Maisie I never thought I would have to throw her over fences. There is also the point that I never thought when we got her that I would need a crane to lift her over fences!8O
The good news is that I have now perfected the dog tossing technique for the 1m high category stockproof fence (loud cheers from the assembled masses). This involves lifting the Fatdog straight up then rolling her almost onto her back at the 1m height mark. There then follows an anticlockwise rotation of up to 90 degrees such that her bum is now facing downwards over the fence.
The bum is lowered to approximately 600mm from the ground when the left hand holding the front end is released. This allows the front paws to drop gently to the ground whilst the back end is supported thus eliminating an unseemly frantic windmilling of paws…and a very large thud!
Training is now commencing on the 2.5m category stockproofed deer fence technique.
