Why do they say Everest is the tallest mountain, when it isn't?
Mt. Everest stretches 8850 meters above sea level, but it has a head start due to the general uplift from the Himalayas. The Hawaiian volcano Mauna Kea is 10,314 meters from stem to stern. Old school math tells me that Everest is 1,164 meters shorter.

Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth, when using sea level as the comparative reference point.
Sea level is the datum used on all topographic maps, bathymetric maps, and even by air navigation. So it only make sense that Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain.
If you wanted to extend your argument, you could begin the measurement of Mt. Everest at the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, and come up with a mountain that is over 20,000 meters tall!
Either way, Mt. Everest wins over Mauna Kea.
