I want to be able to start climbing rope to exercise my upper body. I dont want anything too thin, or too expensive. It will probably need to be 20 - 24 feet long. Any ideas? Could I make my own? Where can I buy cheap?
Call a shop that sells rock climbing gear or a sailing/boating supply shop and ask if they sell "goldline" rope. This looks like old braided hemp rope but is nylon and stronger. Some such shops will sell the rope by the foot on reels. If you are not going to be falling on it (in other words, putting a sharp dynamic load on it) 1/2" diameter should be strong enough. You can buy a 20' piece or whatever length you want, and they will hot-cut the end so it doesn't unravel and you will be all set.

Stealing it would just be wrong! and using it might be risky but with careful considerations and evaluations it might give the assist a person needs, but you can not rely on it and should understand the risk in using it.
Booty really isn't anything more then wall art and should never be considered safe under any circumstance. Fixed gear is never Booty..
