Climbing Equipment Rope
Could you use a single twin rope to climb Mont Blanc up the Gouter Route?
We are planning a climb up Mont Blanc up the Gouter Route. Last year we tried, but exhausted ourselves by taking far too much equipment with us (i.e, tents, cooking equipment, etc - and we used the huts instead!). We also took a 60m half-rope with us last year. As a weight-reducing exercise, we are contemplating taking a single 30m twin-rope instead. There are 3 members in the party, and we are climbing the Gouter Route, so the rope will be used for security, roping the team together... is this a good idea to reduce weight, or would you stay with other rope types?
I won't pretend to be familiar with this route, so I will take you at your word that the rope is only needed for roping together (I assume this means glacier travel, simul-climbing, things of that sort), i.e. no belayed climbing with real falls on the rope. If this is the case, it would probably be fine. I have used a 30m half rope with a three person glacier travel team in Alaska and had no troubles...but keep in mind I used a single "half" rope, not a single "twin" rope. A half rope can really take a fall on its own, but a twin rope shouldn't be expected to bear such a load, because you run the risk of it failing catastrophically. So as long as you are using it for glacier travel or for relatively safe running belays, etc, this is a good idea. But if there are any fully belayed pitches where any significant falls could occur, saving a few ounces isn't worth it. If you want to increase your safety level slightly without increasing weight by much, you could swap that twin for a half rope.
On another note, what are you doing for weight reduction in addition to this? What are your sleeping plans (huts, tents, bivy?) Also take into account how much and what types of pro you are bringing and make sure team members arent unnecessarily doubling up on gear (ie you could all share a stove, share repair kits, etc.).

What is the hardest workout program you can suggest (without going to the gym more than once a week) ?
I need something effective and on the insane side of challenging. I don't have access to any weird or special equipment (yoga balls, climbing ropes or gear, parachutes, etc...), so that stuff is out of the question. I need a workout program that will incorporate as many elements of physical fitness as possible (strength, endurance, speed, pain tolerance, stretching, nutrition, and long lasting fitnes). Your suggestions are appreciated.
You should seriously consider Pilates. Pilates is a totaly body fitness system developed by Joseph Pilates decades ago. The system focuses on complete strength using your own body as resistence as well as flexibility and health.
Pilates has enjoyed a resurging popularity recently as dancers and other performers have found it to be effective and fast. Once it took hold it found it's way into classes in gyms all over the world.
There are devices used in some pilates classes but none of these are necessary. If you pick up some literature on the exercises taught by the creator and do them faithfully every day you will not even recognize your body in 3 months.
