caving information please?
I'm starting my Senior project and I chose caving as my topic. I would like to know what sort of equipment i need, where i can buy it, and how much it will cost or at least an estimate. i don't mean going high tech. please think "not a whole lot of money" i know a good bit of money will have to be spent, but i want to do this the cheapest way possible. also if any of you have ever gone caving in georgia and know of anyone i could contact for more information please email me! i still need a project facilitator. thanks!
Hi There... My husband and I are Georgia Cavers. We have been caving for about 10 years now. Basic HORIZONTAL caving equipment is not too expensive. The most important item you need is a good helmet and a light. Good caving helmets cost around $60 and up. Head lamps vary in price. You will also need some knee pads, elbow pads and gloves. That is the basic stuff. Good sources to buy caving gear from are www.onrope1.com, www.innermountainoutfitters.com, and www.karstsports.com. I would say you could get all that stuff under $200. Of course you can buy any type of knee and elbow pads from your local stores. You should also always carry more than one source of light.
I have two web sites you can check out. This one is for pictures http://caverkelly.spaces.live.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/user/undergroundearth for my videos.
Now there is also VERTICAL Caving. This involves getting on rope and rappelling. That is where you will spend most of your money on your equipment.
If you have any more questions or seriously want to go on a caving trip send me an email!! Cavers like to call Tennessee, Alabama & Georgia TAG. There are more caves in Tennessee and Alabama than there are in Georgia but Georgia does have one of the deepest PITS around and it is just under 600 foot!!
